Fundamentals of Emaan

In this post we are going to discuss few important Characteristics of Emaan and the five fundamentals of Emaan. In the earlier posts we have discussed the definition of Deen as per Quran; the two basic fundamentals of Deen as Ayaat and Emaan and have defined the word Ayaat as per Quran. In the last post, we discussed the definition of Emaan which means to have strong faith on something, to trust, to submit to, to declare something being confirmed truth, to guarantee and to obey, not as a blind faith but after utilizing all our faculties including our intellectual ones i.e. our thinking and pondering. Emaan is conviction based on reason and knowledge; a conviction that results from full mental acceptance and intellectual satisfaction; the kind of conviction that gives one a feeling of inner peace, contentment and satisfaction.

Characteristics of Emaan-  As per Quran, following are the basic characteristics of Emaan

  • To accept everything which the Qur’an says as Haq(the most confirmed truth) is Emaan.

[Quran 2:26] ….those who believed know that it is the Haq from their lord….

  • Unless Emaan enters the heart, it cannot be called Emaan.

[Quran 49:14] The bedouins say, “We have believed.” Say, “You have not believed; but say, ‘We have submitted,’ for faith has not yet entered your hearts…..

  • Emaan will lead human beings from darkness towards light.

[Quran 2:257] Allah is the ally of those who believe. He brings them out from darkness into the light. And those who disbelieve – their allies are Taghut. They take them out of the light into darkness……

The Fundamentals of Emaan-  [Quran 2:177] Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is one who believes in Allah , the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask, and for freeing slaves; establishes Sala’t and gives zakah; fulfill their promise when they promise; and are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.

As per Quran, the five Fundamentals of Emaan are as follows

1- Emaan on Allah

2- Emaan on Messengers

3- Emaan on Mala’ik (Angels)

4- Emaan on Books of Revelation

5- Emaan on the Day of Judgment

[Quran 04:136] O you who have believed, believe in Allah and His Messenger and the Book that He sent down upon His Messenger and the book which He sent down before. And whoever disbelieves in Allah , His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Day of Judgement has certainly gone far astray.

In the upcoming posts, we will be discussing each of the above fundamental aspects one by one to discuss what Quran says about each fundamental aspect of Emaan.
