And in that for you Bala (بَلَاءٌ) from great Rabbekum (رَبِّكُمْ) yours.’
B. THE CONCEPT:
THE CONTEXT
The earlier Ayahs of Surah Al-A’raf continue the story of Nabiy Musa and Fira’un by telling us first Their Tradition and Their Approach, by discussing their socially acceptable customs, traditions, and practices. These practices led to aimless wandering and useless activities, diluting their connection to the divine purpose, and causing scarcity and deficiency of resources for them. Allah’s laws of cause and effect aim to prevent people from wandering and useless practices, leading to resource scarcity and labor deficiency by compelling people to do Zikar- to read, understand, and implement the Ayaat of Allah, learn from previous nations, and be grateful of Allah’s blessings by following the laws of Allah. Instead of doing Zikar, they attributed the blessings they received from Allah to themselves, believing they were the cause behind them. However, they attributed the worst behaviors and results thereof to Musa and those with him. This lack of knowledge and understanding of the connection between Allah’s message and Hasanat was a significant issue with the people of Fira’un, who did not seek knowledge and instead approached Allah’s signs and Ayats as if they are unfamiliar. They blindly followed traditions, customs, and rituals, lacking intellect and inability to seek knowledge and deep conviction with their Nabiy as well as Allah’s message.
The earlier Ayahs then tell us about Azaab upon them and their Extreme Forms of Kufr. Since the people of Fira’un did not do Zikar nor took Allah’s message as Hasanat, these ayahs are told us about not only the Azaab of Allah as consequences of their own action, but these are also such Ayaat of Allah, which are well diversified, often repeated, well- explained and presented times and again in order to wake and shake people up from their extreme state of Kufar, which are basically of five types. (1) Being faced with overflowing of water or anything causing destruction, such as floods, typhoons, etc. as well as referring to any overwhelming condition of accumulation, abundance, wealth, titles, resources, or actions causing destruction. (2) Any outbreak as well as the situation of involving intense, harmful behavior towards others. (3) Lousy behaviors, awful or rotten conduct in people (4) Filthy Neglectful, harmful, and abusive behaviors and (5) People fighting with each other People fighting, causing animosity, anger, killing, and bloodshed. But instead of waking up from their extreme state of Kufar, the people of Fira’un became proud and arrogant, focusing on Juram acts and creating doubts, fears, and uncertainty, leading to extreme actions in Kufar. Thus, they were under the influence of Shaytaan and suffered from blind following, leading to moral, ethical, and social disfigurement. They sought help from Musa, as Hasanat is crucial to his duties and the system of Allah. They promised that if Allah’s system would remove their condition, they would Amanu with Musa and help the followers of Musa who have gotten rid of their traditions and culture under the impacts of Allah’s message. However, when Allah removed them from their blind following, they breached their promises.
Thus, they were exposed to their Final Recompense. Since even after being delivered Allah’s message, they violated the terms of their agreement, the people of Fira’un faced the consequences of their own actions. Through their practices, laws, rituals, people, and aspects, they got drowned, engulfed, and overwhelmed in Kufar to the extent of being dead- both physically as well as metaphorically in terms of not being ALIVE anymore, as intellectual compassionate humans Their actions of denial, rejection and ridicule of Allah’s message resulted in their ignorance, lack of knowledge, and obliviousness to Allah’s Hidayah, guidance, and blessings.
CONCEPT OF THESE AYAHS
Ayah 7:137, “And Auras’na (وَأَوْرَثْنَا) the Quome (الْقَوْمَ) those who Kanu (كَانُوا) Yastaza’funa (يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ) Mashariq (مَشَارِقَ) of the Arde (الْأَرْضِ) and its Maghrabe (وَمَغَارِبَهَا) which Barakna (بَارَكْنَا) in it. And Tammat (وَتَمَّتْ) Kalemat (كَلِمَتُ) Rabbeka (رَبِّكَ) the Husna (الْحُسْنَىٰ) A’ala (عَلَىٰ) Baniy (بَنِي) Israel (إِسْرَائِيلَ) with what S’abaru (صَبَرُوا). And Damarna (وَدَمَّرْنَا) what Kana (كَانَ) Yas’na’u (يَصْنَعُ) Fira’un and his Quom (وَقَوْمُهُ) and what Kanu (كَانُوا) Ya’reshuna (يَعْرِشُونَ).”
And inherited as duties (وَأَوْرَثْنَا) to establish and strengthen (الْقَوْمَ) those who earlier aimed to be (كَانُوا) suppressed, weakened, and tortured (يُسْتَضْعَفُونَ) the sunrise, east part (مَشَارِقَ) of the earth (الْأَرْضِ) and it’s the sunset, west part (وَمَغَارِبَهَا) which was blessed with abundance, prosperity, good fortune and success (بَارَكْنَا) in it. And brought to completion in terms of to discharge one’s duties in accordance with it (وَتَمَّتْ) the message, the Allah’s rules and commandments (كَلِمَتُ) of their Rabb (رَبِّكَ) the best as Ahsan- such things, behaviors, conducts, events, which are best of the best, given more than their due rights as Inaam-with no expectations in return and are the most desirable, most pleasing to them not just to their eyes but to their whole being (الْحُسْنَىٰ) up to its maximum and epitome (عَلَىٰ) upon those who are the foundations, walking in the footsteps of, establishing (بَنِي) Israel – those who are followers of any of Allah’s Nabiyeen, under the influence of whom, they follow the Deen of Allah instead of their Millat- the traditions, practices, culture and norms of their society (إِسْرَائِيلَ) with what they remained steadfast and persistent (صَبَرُوا). And to destroy or to kill something stone dead, to break into pieces; to cause damage to something, to lay in ruins; to wreak havoc, to annihilate or eradicate someone or something, to damage, desolate or dilapidate something, to level to the ground, to pull down, tear down, flatten or raze something; to undermine; be annihilated, destroyed, die or perish (وَدَمَّرْنَا) what aimed to reach through their actions the destination of (كَانَ) what fabricated and manufactured (يَصْنَعُ) Fira’un and those of his nation whom he established (وَقَوْمُهُ) and what they aimed to reach through their actions except (كَانُوا) shelter, protection, establishment and shield (يَعْرِشُونَ).
After discussing the people (Aal’e) of Firaun, Allah is now discussing the Baniy Israel, i.e., those who were the foundations of and working towards leaving their Millat- traditions, practices and customs as inherited from their forefathers, in order to adopt the ways and message of Allah. Thus, the same people who were suppressed, weakened, and tortured as Aale Fira’un settled across the world from east to west (Mashriq to Maghrib) and were not only given inheritance but also duties and responsibilities to take care of their respected geographic locations wherein they settled and were blessed with abundance, prosperity, good fortune, and success. And this is how the message, the rules and commandments of their Rabb were brought to completion with them when they discharged their duties in accordance with it. That is how Allah’s message resulted in the best as Ahsan up to its maximum through such things, behaviors, conducts, events, which are best of the best, given more than their due rights as Inaam-with no expectations in return and are the most desirable, most pleasing to them not just to their eyes but to their whole. This was the result of the Baniy Israel remaining steadfast and persistent in order to destroy, cause damage, pull down, tear down, and annihilate three important aspects 1) Everything that Aale Fira’un aimed to reach through their actions, especially whatever they caused to exist, created, fabricated, and manufactured; 2) Everything that could be their shelter, protection, establishment, and shield.
Ayah 7:138, “And Jauzna (وَجَاوَزْنَا) with Baniy (بِبَنِي) Israel (إِسْرَائِيلَ) the Bahara (الْبَحْرَ), then came A’ala (عَلَىٰ) Quome (قَوْمٍ) Ya’kafun (يَعْكُفُونَ). A’ala (عَلَىٰ) As’naam (أَصْنَامٍ) to them Qalu (قَالُوا), ‘Ya Musa, Aja’l (اجْعَلْ) for us deity like what for them the deities.’ Qala (قَالَ), ‘Indeed you Quomun (قَوْمٌ) you Tajhalun (تَجْهَلُونَ).”
Ayah 7:139, “Indeed, these Mutabbar (مُتَبَّرٌ) what they in it. And Bat’alun (وَبَاطِلٌ) what Kanu (كَانُوا) they do.”
And what was given as excuse for in order to allow, gain belief, influence or make legitimate (وَجَاوَزْنَا) with those who were the foundations, working for (بِبَنِي) the Israel, those who have left their Millat to adopt the ways and message of Allah (إِسْرَائِيلَ) to go in the opposite direction, in terms of doing of Kufar w.r.t. the five fundamentals of Emaan, becoming miser, in terms of withholding of wealth and not spending for the benefit of others one’s wealth, title, resources and property, as well as their efforts; being opponents of in direct opposition to the system of S’alaat and Zakat; not honoring covenants with Allah, and becoming steadfast in the path of Taghoot, in direct opposition to Allah’s laws and deed (الْبَحْرَ), then came the epitome and prestige of (عَلَىٰ) those who establish and strengthen (قَوْمٍ) to correct, smooth out, and harmonize the matters between individuals, to go towards or strive towards Allah’s Deen and connecting people along with utter respect and conviction of its benefits and to remain connected to it on a permanent basis (يَعْكُفُونَ). Those who were at the epitome of (عَلَىٰ)- the lifeless and purposeless beings who are taken as deities, who are worshipped for their supposedly magical powers or because they are supposedly inhabited by a holy spirit’ (أَصْنَامٍ) to them reflected from their conducts and speech (قَالُوا), ‘Ya Musa, appoint for duties (اجْعَلْ) for us deity like what for them the deities.’ Reflected from his conducts and speech (قَالَ), ‘Indeed you are those who establish and strengthen (قَوْمٌ) you those who don’t have knowledge, illiterate, or those who are considered foolish, unwise or stupid, as they do not use their Aqal, reasoning and intellect- common sense or they do not have knowledge (تَجْهَلُونَ).’
Indeed, these were those who are involved in acts of going in opposition or contesting Allah’s message without realizing (مُتَبَّرٌ) what they had in it.’ And absolute falsehood; involved in those destructive forces, efforts and intentions the basic aim of which is to create lawlessness and destruction, death and sufferings, Fasaad and to destroy human faculties and capabilities; death, destruction, disability and sufferings; failures and disappointments in all walks of life; depths of decline, hatred and dislike by others; and divisions and animosity/fights amongst nations; by causing destruction of human faculties, abilities and resources, or the wastage of human senses, faculties, abilities or resources rendering these null and void or ineffective (وَبَاطِلٌ) what they aimed to reach the destination based on what (كَانُوا) they do.
The first part of this ayah is the continuation of the three aspects that Baniy Israel remained steadfast and persistent upon in order to destroy and annihilate these important and significant aspects. Thus, in addition to remaining persistent in their efforts to destroy 1) Everything that Aale Fira’un aimed to reach through their actions, especially whatever they caused to exist, created, fabricated, and manufactured; 2) Everything that could be their shelter, protection, establishment, and shield; the Baniy Israel also remained persistent and steadfast in terms of their endeavors and efforts to destroy 3) Everything that was given as excuse for in order to allow, gain belief, influence or make legitimate for them to revert back as Aal-e-Firaun, all such excuses given for them to be able to go in the opposite direction, in terms of them being reverted back to doing of Kufar, them becoming miser, in terms of withholding of wealth and not spending for the benefit of others their wealth, title, resources and property, efforts; to make them opponents of and in direct opposition to the system of S’alaat and Zakat and to revert them back as working in the path of Taghoot, in direct opposition to Allah’s laws and path. Thus, based on these persistent efforts, Baniy Israel were able to establish and strengthen themselves as per epitome and prestige as those who correct, smooth out, and harmonize matters between individuals, who go towards and strive towards Allah’s Deen and connect people along with utter respect and conviction of its benefits and who remained connected to it on a permanent basis.
After witnessing this strengthened, highly prosperous, well-connected, and resilient communities, those from among Aale Fira’un, who were taken up as deities, who are worshipped, whose laws are followed, for their supposedly magical powers or because they are supposedly inhabited or connected to the divine, asked Nabiy Musa, to appoint the same deity as theirs. The response from Nabiy Musa, is reflective of the aims and objectives of such deities, whose laws people follow in place of Allah’s. Nabiy Musa replied that, ‘Indeed you are those who establish and strengthen, the people and acts who/which lack knowledge.’ Since the basic aim of their deities, their religious scholars and preachers is to present themselves as deities, their laws to be followed in blind following and complete submission, they promote and foster, lack of using of one’s intellect and reasons, so that people remain illiterate with lack of knowledge and understanding, trained to remain foolish, unwise or stupid, so that people do not use their Aqal, reasoning and intellect- common sense, do not seek knowledge and therefore keep on blindly following the laws and their deities, instead of the questioning these or being able to rise in rebelliousness against them. Now when they are witnessing the blessed state of Baniy Israel, they want the same deity to be theirs as well. However, these religious leaders and preachers, themselves taken as As’naam (false deities), were the same ones who were involved in acts of going in opposition and contesting to Allah’s message without realizing that Allah’s message is the source of all these blessings. The basic aim and endeavors of these As’naam, the false deities are to be involved in creating and promoting absolute falsehood and extreme acts of injustices; involved in those destructive forces, efforts, and intentions the basic aim of which was to create lawlessness and destruction, death, sufferings, destruction of human faculties and efforts and divisions and animosity amongst humanity.
Ayah 7:140, “Qala (قَالَ), ‘Aghair (أَغَيْرَ) Allah do you Abghaekum (أَبْغِيكُمْ) deity and Allah is the one who Fazalakum (فَضَّلَكُمْ) you A’ala (عَلَى) the A’alimeen (الْعَالَمِينَ).?”
Reflected from conducts and speech (قَالَ), ‘Does other than, without and in opposition to (أَغَيْرَ) Allah do you go to extreme, cross the boundaries; enter into rivalry against Allah and be in the state of rebelliousness against Allah’s laws, system, rules and regulations and go to extreme against people due to that jealousy and animosity (أَبْغِيكُمْ) this deity, and Allah is the one who blessed you with all the bounties such as Allah’s message & guidance, partners and supporters as well as all the economic benefits such as knowledge, wisdom, money, wealth and property (فَضَّلَكُمْ) at its maximum (عَلَى) among all jurisdictions, dominions, worlds, empires, and kingdoms, as well as among those who have the knowledge and are considered experts (الْعَالَمِينَ).?’
This Ayah is the response of Nabiy Musa, to the As’naam asking Musa to have the same deity as that of Baniy Israel. The response from Nabiy Musa was asking a thought-provoking question to them, that ‘Are you not the ones who are working in opposition to Allah by going to extreme, crossing all boundaries; entering rivalry against Allah, being in the state of rebelliousness against Allah’s laws, system, rules, and regulations and going to extreme against people due to that jealousy and animosity, by taking up deities other than Allah and following laws in contradiction of and apposition to Allah laws? Allah on the other hand, is the one who always aims to bless you with all the bounties such as Allah’s message and guidance, partners, and supporters as well as all the economic benefits such as knowledge, wisdom, money, wealth, and property up to its maximum among all jurisdictions, dominions, worlds, empires, and kingdoms, as well as among those who have the knowledge and are considered experts.’ By asking this question to the As’naam, Nabiy Musa was basically asking them as to how is it possible that they would send out Ba’atil and Evil to the world and expect Allah’s blessings in return, whereas Allah’s system is nothing but embodiment of blessings for everyone. It was the consequences of their own actions, that they are deprived from its benefits and in the state of utter and long-lasting Azaab.
Ayah 7:141, “And when Anjaenakum (أَنْجَيْنَاكُمْ) you from people of Fira’un – they Yasumunakum (يَسُومُونَكُمْ) you Suua’ (سُوءَ) the A’zaab (الْعَذَابِ). They Yaqtaluna (يُقَتِّلُونَ) Anbakum (أَبْنَاءَكُمْ) yours and they Yasteheuna (وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ) your Nisaakum (نِسَاءَكُمْ). And in that for you Bala (بَلَاءٌ) from great Rabbekum (رَبِّكُمْ) yours.”
And when saved and rescued (أَنْجَيْنَاكُمْ) you from people of Fira’un – they were creating grinding, sharpening impacts of the Azaab, as well as you being there for a very long time (يَسُومُونَكُمْ) through such acts, sayings and deeds that were unpleasant and to your whole being; that created Fasaad, imbalance and destruction causing disbalance in the society, community as a whole; that involved making such trade or transactions, with a focus of selfish interests and egoistic desires through deceit and destruction for you, aiming to earn wealth and money at your cost; that are reflective of worst behavior towards you, not giving you respect, honor, dignity, justice as well as suppressing your due rights- basically all such deed, actions or sayings, which were at, such a worst level (سُوءَ) of being in the state of A’zaab- harshest, terrible punishment, pain & suffering, trauma, lawlessness, destruction, death and disease (الْعَذَابِ). They used to kill, take the life out, physically as well as metaphorically kill by degrading, abusing, humiliating, killing confidence, making you in-effective dead by destroying the inbuilt faculties and abilities, by deprive knowledge, education and training, and by blocking the resources and means (يُقَتِّلُونَ) those of your people who were the foundations, the resourceful segments, who were affluent and influential amongst you (أَبْنَاءَكُمْ) and they used to let live and survive (وَيَسْتَحْيُونَ) those amongst you who lack resources, were dependent upon others and resource-starved (نِسَاءَكُمْ). And in that for you were events and situations, which you were surrounded by, the aim of which were to bring out your real characteristics (بَلَاءٌ) from your great Rabb(رَبِّكُمْ).’
This Ayah, Allah reverts to the discussion of Baniy Israel, as to discuss what exactly the Baniy Israel got rescued and saved from the hands of the people of Fira’un. Earlier the Baniy Israel were in a grinding like and sharpening impacts of the Azaab. For a very long time, the Baniy Israel were in a state of harshest, terrible punishment, pain & suffering, trauma, lawlessness, destruction, death and disease due to the acts of the people of Fira’un, that were unpleasant and undesirable to their whole beings; that created Fasaad, imbalance and destruction causing discord and disbalance in their communities; that involved making such trade or transactions, with a focus of selfish interests and egoistic desires of the people of Fira’un that they carried out through deceit and destruction of Baniy Israel, aiming to earn wealth and money at their cost; that are reflective of worst possible behaviors towards them, not giving them respect, honor, dignity, justice as well as suppressing their due rights- basically all such deed, actions or sayings, which were at a worst level pain and sufferings for the Baniy Israel. They used to kill both physically as well as metaphorically the resourceful segments of the Baniy Israel, who were their foundations, their affluent and influential segment by degrading, abusing, humiliating them, killing their confidence, making them in-effective or dead by destroying their inbuilt faculties and abilities, by depriving them of knowledge, education, and training, and by blocking their resources and means. On the other hand, they used to let live and let survive those people of Baniy Israel, who lack resources, were dependent upon others and resource-starved. Although this was indeed a situation of pain and suffering for the Baniy Israel, but these events and situations brought out and exposed the real characteristics of the Baniy Israel, due to which they let go of their traditions, practices, and cultures of their forefather, under the influence of Allah’s message and adopted the path of Allah under the lead of their Rasool.
C. LESSONS AS PER THESE AYAHS:
These Ayahs of Surah Al-A’raf continues the story of Baniy Israel and people of Fira’un as follows
- ATTROCITIES OF AALE FIRA’UN: Baniy Israel faced severe punishment, pain, suffering, and trauma due to actions of the people of Fira’un. They were causing discord and imbalance in their communities by engaging in deceitful trade and transactions, focusing on selfish interests and egoistic desires. Baniy Israel’s resourceful and influential segments were targeted by degrading, abusing, and humiliating them, destroying their abilities and resources, whereas they allowed resource-starved and resource-deprived people to survive. The Baniy Israel faced pain and suffering, but their true characteristics were exposed, leading them to abandon their traditions and practices, adopting Allah’s path under their Rasool’s guidance.
- BANIY ISRAEL BEING RESCUED: Baniy Israel, left their traditions, practices and customs to adopt the ways and message of Allah and thus, the same people who were suppressed and weakened by the people of Fira’un, settled globally, receiving inheritance and responsibilities to care for their respective geographic locations, leading to prosperity, good fortune, and success. This is how the message, the rules and commandments of their Rabb were fulfilled by them through discharging their duties, leading to their new situation as being blessed with the best, the most desirable and most pleasing for them.
- EFFORTS OF BANIY ISRAEL: This was the result of the Baniy Israel remaining steadfast and persistent in order to destroy, cause damage and annihilate three important aspects 1) Everything that Aale Fira’un aimed to achieve and their goals; 2) Shelter, protection, establishment, and shield for their survival and 3) The excuses given to Baniy Israel to revert them back to Aal-e-Firaun, such as Kufar, miserdom and withholding wealth; opposition to the S’alaat and Zakat systems, all their acts which intended to make them oppose Allah’s laws and path and to lead them to a reversion to the path of Taghoot. Thus, based on these persistent efforts, Baniy Israel were able to establish and strengthen themselves as epitomes of and establishers of Allah’s Deen, harmonizing and connecting people together and with the foundations of Deen, and remaining permanently connected to it.
- FALESE DEITIES- THEIR AIMS AND ENDEAVORS: Those from among Aale Fira’un, who were taken up as deities and worshipped sought Nabiy Musa to appoint the same deity as theirs after witnessing prosperous, well-connected communities of Baniy Israel. Nabiy Musa criticized these religious leaders and preachers- the As’naam (false deities) who follow their laws instead of Allah’s, stating that they establish and strengthen people lacking knowledge. These deities promote blind following and submission, fostering illiteracy and a lack of intellect and reason. They encourage people to remain foolish and unwise, without seeking knowledge, oppose Allah’s message and promote absolute falsehood, aiming to create lawlessness, destruction, death, suffering, and divisions among humanity. Their primary goal is to contest Allah’s message, which is the source of all blessings. Nabiy Musa responded to the As’naam’s request for the same deity as Baniy Israel, questioning those who oppose Allah by crossing boundaries, rivalry, and rebelling against Allah’s laws. Allah aims to bless individuals with bounties, guidance, partners, and economic benefits. Nabiy Musa asked the As’naam about sending out Ba’atil and Evil to the world, expecting Allah’s blessings in return. Allah’s system is the embodiment of blessings for everyone, and their actions result in a state of long-lasting Azaab.
