Surah Al-Ana’m Ayah # 118 – 127 (6:118 – 6:127)
A. TRANSLATION
١١٨ فَكُلُوا مِمَّا ذُكِرَ اسْمُ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ بِآيَاتِهِ مُؤْمِنِينَ
[Quran 6:118] So Kulu (فَكُلُوا) from what Zukera (ذُكِرَ) Ismu (اسْمُ) of Allah upon it, if you Kuntum (كُنْتُمْ) with Allah’s Ayaat (بِآيَاتِهِ) Momineen (مُؤْمِنِينَ).
[Quran 6:119] And what is for you that you do not Kulu (تَأْكُلُوا) from what is Zikar (ذُكِرَ) Ism (اسْمُ) of Allah upon it. And certainly, Fas’ala (فَصَّلَ) for you what is Harama (حَرَّمَ) upon you except what is Azt’urtum (اضْطُرِرْتُمْ) you to it. And indeed, Kas’eer (كَثِيرًا) so that they Yuzelal (لَيُضِلُّونَ) with their Ahwahim (بِأَهْوَائِهِمْ) with Ghair (بِغَيْرِ) Ilm (عِلْمٍ). Indeed, Rabbaka (رَبَّكَ) was the one who A’alamu (أَعْلَمُ) with the Mu’tadeen (بِالْمُعْتَدِينَ).
[Quran 6:120] And Zaru (وَذَرُوا) Zahira (ظَاهِرَ) Al-Is’me (الْإِثْمِ) and its Bat’inahu (وَبَاطِنَهُ). Indeed, those who Yaksabuna (يَكْسِبُونَ) the Is’ma (الْإِثْمَ) will Yajzuna (سَيُجْزَوْنَ) with what they Kanu (كَانُوا) Yaqtarefun (يَقْتَرِفُونَ).
[Quran 6:121] And do not Takulu (تَأْكُلُوا) from what is not Yuzakara (يُذْكَرِ) Ismu (اسْمُ) Allah upon it. And indeed, it is so that to Fisqun (لَفِسْقٌ). And indeed, the Shayateena (الشَّيَاطِينَ) so that to Yuhuna (لَيُوحُونَ) towards their Awliya (أَوْلِيَائِهِمْ) so that they Yujadelukum (لِيُجَادِلُوكُمْ) you. And if you At’a’atumuhum (أَطَعْتُمُوهُمْ) them, indeed, so that to you Mushrekun (لَمُشْرِكُونَ).
[Quran 6:122] Is the one who Kana (كَانَ) Mayyatan (مَيْتًا) then Ahyeenahu (فَأَحْيَيْنَاهُ) him/her and Ja’alna (وَجَعَلْنَا) for him/her Nooran (نُورًا)- Yamshey (يَمْشِي) with it from the Annase (النَّاسِ) similar to the one in the Zulumaate (الظُّلُمَاتِ) then not with Kharij (بِخَارِجٍ) from it? That is Zayyin (زُيِّنَ) for the Kaafireen (لِلْكَافِرِينَ) what they Kanu (كَانُوا) do.
[Quran 6:123] And thus, Ja’alna (جَعَلْنَا) from every Qaryatin (قَرْيَةٍ) Akabera (أَكَابِرَ) its Mujremeha (مُجْرِمِيهَا) so that they Yumkuru (لِيَمْكُرُوا) in it. And what they Yumkuruna (يَمْكُرُونَ) except with their Anfusahim (بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ) and what they Yasha’runa (يَشْعُرُونَ).
[Quran 6:124] And when Ja’atuhum (جَاءَتْهُمْ) them Ayaat (آيَةٌ), Qalu (قَالُوا), ‘Never Numinu (نُؤْمِنَ) until is given similar to what was given Rusulu (رُسُلُ) of Allah.’ Allah A’lamu (أَعْلَمُ) Hais’u (حَيْثُ). Yaja’lu (يَجْعَلُ) Allah’s Risalat (رِسَالَتَهُ) will Yus’eebu (سَيُصِيبُ) those who Ajramu (أَجْرَمُوا)- S’agharun (صَغَارٌ) near Allah. And severe Azaabun (وَعَذَابٌ) with what they kanu (كَانُوا) Yumkurun (يَمْكُرُونَ).
[Quran 6:125] So, whoever Yurede (يُرِدِ) of Allah that Yahdeyahu (يَهْدِيَهُ)- Yushrah (يَشْرَحْ) S’adrahu (صَدْرَهُ) to Islaam (لِلْإِسْلَامِ). And whoever Yurid (يُرِدْ) that Yuzelluhu (يُضِلَّهُ)- Yaja’l (يَجْعَلْ) S’adrahu (صَدْرَهُ) Zaeyeqan (ضَيِّقًا) Harajan (حَرَجًا) as though Yas’a’adu (يَصَّعَّدُ) from the sky. Thus, Allah Yaja’alu (يَجْعَلُ)- the Rijsa (الرِّجْسَ) A’ala (عَلَى) on those who do not Yuminun (يُؤْمِنُونَ).
١٢٦ وَهَٰذَا صِرَاطُ رَبِّكَ مُسْتَقِيمًا ۗ قَدْ فَصَّلْنَا الْآيَاتِ لِقَوْمٍ يَذَّكَّرُونَ
[Quran 6:126] And this was S’irat’u (صِرَاطُ) Rabbeka (رَبِّكَ) Mustaqueeman (مُسْتَقِيمًا). Certainly Fas’alna (فَصَّلْنَا) the Ayaat (الْآيَاتِ) so that to Quomin (لِقَوْمٍ) Yazakkarun (يَذَّكَّرُونَ).
١٢٧ لَهُمْ دَارُ السَّلَامِ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ ۖ وَهُوَ وَلِيُّهُمْ بِمَا كَانُوا يَعْمَلُونَ
[Quran 6:127] For them is Daaru (دَارُ) the Ssalame (السَّلَامِ) near their Rabb (رَبِّهِمْ) and is the one who is their Waliyuhum (وَلِيُّهُمْ) with what they Kanu (كَانُوا) do.
B. THE CONCEPT:
CONTEXT OF THESE AYAHS- WHAT WE HAVE DISCUSSED SO FAR
Through the earlier Ayahs of Suran Al Anam, we have learned the Endeavors of those who do Shirk and want to induct others to their system: Their basic aims and endeavors are to seek division and cause separation between humanity through and using Allah- as if they are striving and working in the path of Allah to uphold their covenants with Allah- as if a sign of Allah has come to them, as if they are the only ones who are at Aman with that sign of Allah that no one else is. Therefore, we, have been advised to warn people at large only the Ayaat of Allah, as those that are mentioned in the kalam of Allah and the many creations of Allah are the real Ayaat of Allah. Hence there is no possibility that anyone would have received any Ayat from Allah that no one else has. We have been asked to counter the endeavors of such people by teaching everyone that how can such people, who rely on other than Allah, who have taken up deities from besides Allah, who take their Shuraka’a as their deities – how can they make you realize anything when they themselves are not Amanu; when they do not seek knowledge and do use their reasoning to be at utter conviction with all these Ayaat of Allah. Them being blind followers with their closed mindedness is reflected from their views, thoughts, viewpoints, opinions, understandings and perceptions- all of which clearly tell us that they have never Amanu with Ayaat of Allah. The divine instructions w.r.t. such people are that they should be left wandering aimlessly and blindly in their path and the system of Taghoot and Shirk, that they have established as opposition to Allah’s system.
This is how the whole system is created which acts as Opposition to Allah’s Naba, message: All Naba of Allah, Allah’s message and Hidaya is met with huge opposition and animosity by such people who are all working as Shayateen, being influenced by Khutuwaat of Shaitaan and working under the influence of their own egoistic self and Nafs-e-Ammara. Such Shayateen are either those from among their own community members or near and dear ones, whom they know and understand or such people could also be those whom they cannot comprehend since the real traits of such Shayateen are hidden and unknown to them. The basic tool on the basis of which they are able to influence and impact others causing to change the behaviors is that their speech, conducts and endeavors are decorated to look, feel and sound beautiful, attractive and pleasant with the use of false, delusional, full of wishful thinking and deception-based aspects.
In the earlier Ayahs, Allah has also asked a very thought-provoking question, as to how can anyone take up deities from besides Allah when Allah is the one who has Anzalna the Kitaab? How can anyone take up deities from besides Allah, follow laws of Deen from outside the Kalam of Allah by committing acts of Shirk and taking up Shuraka’a, when Allah is the one who is the source of all that is received by humanity; who has blessed us through the Kitaab, the laws of nature and the laws of Deen- when the whole of Allah’s system are such that are based on the laws of cause and effect – when Allah is the being who is carrying out the process of Raboibiat for everyone- when Allah is the one who has blessed the humanity with all the Naimat, bounties and blessings with absolute truth, justice and as our duty and responsibility to treat Allah as our only Hikm in Deen, as our only deity, whose laws we should follow and be obedient of in matters of Deen? Based on all this, the divine instruction is never to be of the Mumtareen- those who are doubtful, who do not seek or have knowledge, who make assumptions, enter into arguments and disagreements rather than following the Haqq- absolute truth & justice; who assume and mix Baatil- falsehood, injustice with haqq- truth & justice and who enter into disputes and disagreements with each other on things which are not clear to them without knowledge.
The most important Divine Warning: if you follow the most on earth- For those who take up any Hikm from besides Allah, following their laws instead of the laws as per the Kalam of Allah, the divine warning is that ‘if you are obedient followers of most of those on earth, they would cause confusions and mislead you far away from path of Allah since they do nothing except cause delusions, assumptions, falsehood, wishful thinking; leading you all towards such traditions, norms, assumptions, guesses, theories and hearsay which they have adopted due to the lack of their knowledge. And they do nothing except lie, misstate their own opinions as facts, as if those are of Allah’s Kalam, put forward opinions formed without knowledge and tell lies. On the other hand, Allah is the one who not only knows what such people are doing but also gives knowledge to us through these people who have misled everyone away from the path of Allah. Similarly, Allah is also the one who not only knows but also gives knowledge through those who are the guided ones- those who are working on the path of Allah and are on Hidayah.
CONCEPT OF THESE AYAHS
Ayah 6:118, “So Kulu (فَكُلُوا) from what Zukera (ذُكِرَ) Ismu (اسْمُ) of Allah upon it, if you Kuntum (كُنْتُمْ) with Allah’s Ayaat (بِآيَاتِهِ) Momineen (مُؤْمِنِينَ).”
So, consume, engage, use, be in the company of and benefit (فَكُلُوا) from what is Zikar of the Kitaab, remember the blessings of Allah by being Shaakir, engage in actions as required by Allah in utter gratitude towards these blessings, understand and implement the Ayaat of Allah, take lessons from previous nations’ stories and be Aabid of Allah by following the laws of Allah only (ذُكِرَ) through deep and thorough knowledge (اسْمُ) of Allah upon it (what you Kulu), if you aim to reach the final destination through your conducts and endeavors (كُنْتُمْ) with Allah’s signs, proofs & evidences, both from the Kalam of Allah as well as from the creations of Allah (بِآيَاتِهِ) as from those who are the Momineen- who seek knowledge, use their intellect, to be at utter conviction with Allah, who are the upholders of their covenant with Allah and are at peace, and goodwill for others (مُؤْمِنِينَ).
Thus, keeping in considerations the context of these Ayahs, the divine instructions from Ayah 6:118 and onwards, whenever Allah stresses upon ‘to do Zikar of Allah’s Ism upon whatever you Kulu’ does not mean uttering of Allah’s name by your tongues, but doing Zikar, in terms of being Shaakir of Allah, doing acts in utter and deep gratitude of Allah with deep and thorough knowledge of Allah’s Ayaat and Naimat, as the very basic criteria of whatever you Kulu, consume, use, utilize, have company of and benefit. Thus, after warning us about those people who are followed, who are in majority, who cause confusions and mislead people far away from path of Allah since they do nothing except cause delusions, assumptions, falsehood, wishful thinking; leading all towards such traditions, norms, assumptions, guesses, theories and hearsay which they have adopted due to the lack of their knowledge. And they do nothing except lie, misstate their own opinions as facts, as if those are of Allah’s Kalam, put forward opinions formed without knowledge and they tell lies; in this Ayah, Allah is giving us the criteria, the very basic foundations of how to avoid such people by making sure that we consume, use, utilize, benefit to and benefit from only such aspects, things, people and system that do Zikar of Allah’s Ism upon such consumption, use, utilization and benefit. Thus, for example, if we’re invited to a gathering, where the Zikar of Allah’s Ism- deep and thorough knowledge is happening; that is where there is Zikar of the Kitaab, there is remembrance of the blessings of Allah aiming to be Shaakir, whereby people aim to engage in actions as required by Allah in utter gratitude towards these blessings, where the aim is to understand and implement the Ayaat of Allah, or to take lessons from previous nations’ stories and to become Aabid of Allah by following the laws of Allah only; then and only then we should aim for such Kulu, consumption, using, utilizing, benefiting to and benefiting from such gathering. If our aim is to reach the final destination through our conducts and endeavors to become Momineen with the help of Allah’s signs, proofs & evidences, both from the Kalam of Allah as well as from the creations of Allah; to become those seek knowledge, use their intellect, to be at utter conviction with Allah, who are the upholders of their covenant with Allah and are at peace, and goodwill for others; then we should follow the divine guidance to look for only such use, benefit, utilization, consumption, which involves Zikar of deep and thorough knowledge of Allah.
Ayah 6:119, “And what is for you that you do not Kulu (تَأْكُلُوا) from what is Zikar (ذُكِرَ) Ism (اسْمُ) of Allah upon it. Indeed, Rabbaka (رَبَّكَ) was the one who A’alamu (أَعْلَمُ) with the Mu’tadeen (بِالْمُعْتَدِينَ).”
And what is for you that you do not consume, engage, use, be in the company of and benefit (تَأْكُلُوا) from what is Zikar of the Kitaab, remember the blessings of Allah by being Shaakir, engage in actions as required by Allah in utter gratitude towards these blessings, understand and implement the Ayaat of Allah, take lessons from previous nations’ stories and be Aabid of Allah by following the laws of Allah only (ذُكِرَ) through deep and thorough knowledge (اسْمُ) of Allah upon it. And certainly, have explained in detail, cause the laws of cause and effect so that to prepare the perfect recompense (فَصَّلَ) for you what is prohibited and should be avoided at all costs (حَرَّمَ) upon you except what is absolutely necessary for (اضْطُرِرْتُمْ) you to it. And indeed, majority of people to a much larger extent (كَثِيرًا) so that they cause confusions, doubts, create uncertainties, mislead (لَيُضِلُّونَ) with their such delusions, desires, wishful thinking and falsehood the basic aim of which is to mislead away from the path of Allah, such desires, delusions, distraction, deviations, that Zalal people- mislead people away from the Sabeel of Allah, by having them forget and ignore the day of accountability and recompense (بِأَهْوَائِهِمْ) without, other than, devoid of and contradiction of (بِغَيْرِ) knowledge (عِلْمٍ). Indeed, the being who is carrying out the process of Rabobiat for everyone (رَبَّكَ) was the one who knows and gives knowledge (أَعْلَمُ) with and through such people who cause hinderance, weakening, who aim to block, go against and oppose the system of Allah (بِالْمُعْتَدِينَ).
Here, in this Ayah, Allah reiterates the divine wisdom through a thought-provoking question, as to how is it possible that such a simple rule and criterion of ‘Kulu only what is Zikar of Allah’s Ism upon it’ cannot be followed? This simple criterion and divine wisdom are so that we steer clear from all that could mislead us away from the path of Allah- to consume, use, utilize, benefit to and benefit from only such aspects, things, people and system that do Zikar of Allah’s deep and through knowledge upon such consumption, use, utilization and benefit. After reiterating the divine wisdom, Allah identifies the basic parameter of all that has been prohibited in Deen as part of the whole system of requital by Allah, the laws of cause and effect, to give warnings and prepare people for the perfect recompense based on their own choices and decision. By identifying the broad parameters of Deen through the list of prohibitions, Allah has basically set forth the system of cause and effect, as to whoever follows and abide by these parameters would be benefited by the system of Allah and whoever does not would remain deprived. Such list of prohibitions is clearly defined by Allah that should be avoided at all costs, while at the same time, an exception is granted for all such instances where it becomes absolutely necessary and couldn’t be avoided. Allah, then gives us the harsh reality that majority of people, because of their lack of knowledge, do nothing with respect to these laws, except to cause confusions, doubts, create uncertainties, mislead to a great extent with the help of delusions, desires, wishful thinking and falsehood the basic aim of all of which is to mislead away from the path of Allah and to mislead people by having them forget and ignore the day of accountability and recompense; as if this system of requital is non-existent, as if they won’t ever face the recompense and payback for all their actions. The fact is that Allah, the one who is carrying out the process of Rabobiat for everyone not only knows but in fact gives knowledge with and through such people who cause hinderance and bottlenecks for Allah’s Ayaat, aiming to weak, block, go against and oppose the system of Allah.
Ayah 6:120, “And Zaru (وَذَرُوا) Zahira (ظَاهِرَ) Al-Is’me (الْإِثْمِ) and its Bat’inahu (وَبَاطِنَهُ). Indeed, those who Yaksabuna (يَكْسِبُونَ) the Is’ma (الْإِثْمَ) will Yajzuna (سَيُجْزَوْنَ) with what they Kanu (كَانُوا) Yaqtarefun (يَقْتَرِفُونَ).”
And leave, end your association with, disconnect from (وَذَرُوا) open, publicly done, exposed and visible aspects of (ظَاهِرَ) such deeds and conducts which destroys human faculties, abilities and energy, creating pain & suffering, sadness, reduced energy, losing pace with others, death and destruction, which are at such worst levels that if exposed would bring extreme humiliation and disgrace; and also such wealth, power or comfort that one gets without earning it or without making any efforts for it, without his/her due right (الْإِثْمِ) and its those aspects which are hidden, concealed, secret, and invisible (وَبَاطِنَهُ). Indeed, those who earn their recompense as consequences of their own actions and decisions, who bring it upon themselves, absorbing or retaining within themselves the impacts, in order to face the consequences of (يَكْسِبُونَ) such deeds and conducts which destroys human faculties, abilities and energy, creating pain & suffering, sadness, reduced energy, losing pace with others, death and destruction, which are at such worst levels that if exposed would bring extreme humiliation and disgrace; and also such wealth, power or comfort that one gets without earning it or without making any efforts for it, without his/her due right (الْإِثْمَ) will get their recompense (سَيُجْزَوْنَ) with what they aimed to reach the final destination through their conducts of (كَانُوا) their commitments, perpetration, performance and earning (يَقْتَرِفُونَ).
After reiterating the divine wisdom of Kulu Only upon what is done Zikar of Allah’s Ism, the whole system of requital, of the laws of cause and effect build around the parameters of prohibitions as defined by Allah and the harsh reality that most of humanity through the system of requital and parameters of prohibitions, cause confusions, create doubts, mislead people with the aim to weaken, oppose and go against the system of Allah, to a large extent; in this Ayah, Allah then gives us another divine instruction to forsake, disassociate and disconnect from all such deeds and conducts which destroys human faculties, abilities and energy, creating pain & suffering, sadness, reduced energy, death and destruction whether it’s done openly, publicly, with visible aspects of Is’m, or done behind closed doors, with hidden, concealed and secret aspects. The reason is that those who earn their recompense as consequences of their own actions and decisions, who bring it upon themselves, absorbing and retaining within themselves the impacts of such deeds and conducts, in order to face the consequences of such deeds, will get their perfect recompense for all their commitments, perpetration, performance and earnings of such deeds sooner or later.
This Ayah is basically inserted between reiteration of divine instructions to Kulu ONLY upon what is Zikar of Ism of Allah, which shows that to forsake, disassociate and disconnect from all such deeds and conducts which destroys human faculties, abilities and energy whether those are done openly, publicly, with visible aspects of Is’m, or done behind closed doors, with hidden, concealed and secret aspects and the divine instructions to Kulu only upon what is done Zikar of Ism of Allah are strongly linked and connected together in the sense that the key criteria and the very basic foundations of how to avoid such deeds is to make sure that we consume, use, utilize, benefit to and benefit from only such aspects, things, people and system that do Zikar of the Kitaab, through understanding and implementing the Ayaat of Allah, remembering and being grateful for Allah’s blessings & in that utter gratitude following the laws of Allah through explicit actions. Because once and only when we do Zikar of Allah’s Ism upon such consumption, use, utilization and benefit, then we would be able to avoid such deeds and conducts.
Ayah 6:121, “And do not Takulu (تَأْكُلُوا) from what is not Yuzakara (يُذْكَرِ) Ismu (اسْمُ) Allah upon it. And if you At’a’atumuhum (أَطَعْتُمُوهُمْ) them, indeed, so that to you Mushrekun (لَمُشْرِكُونَ).”
And do not consume, engage, use, be in the company of and benefit (تَأْكُلُوا) from what and where is not Zikar of the Kitaab, remember the blessings of Allah by being Shaakir, engage in actions as required by Allah in utter gratitude towards these blessings, understand and implement the Ayaat of Allah, take lessons from previous nations’ stories and be Aabid of Allah by following the laws of Allah only (يُذْكَرِ) through deep and thorough knowledge (اسْمُ) of Allah upon it. And indeed, it is so that to be disobedient of the laws of Allah (لَفِسْقٌ). And indeed, the people, elements, thoughts, laws, system working under the Nafs-e-Ammara (الشَّيَاطِينَ) so that to impact and influence the change in behaviors (لَيُوحُونَ) towards their Waliys- supporters, friends, allies and protectors (أَوْلِيَائِهِمْ) so that they replace and switch the Hidayah of Allah with the path of the Shayateen and its Awliya for (لِيُجَادِلُوكُمْ) you. And if you follow them in obedience as obedient followers out of their likes and abilities, without any force or compulsion, due to their own internal inclination, enthusiasm, motivation, eagerness and commitment (أَطَعْتُمُوهُمْ), indeed, so that to you would be of those who do Shirk (لَمُشْرِكُونَ).
Reiterating it twice already, this Ayah stresses the importance of doing Zikar of Allah’s Ism upon whatever you Kulu- doing Zikar in terms of being Shaakir of Allah, doing acts in utter and deep gratitude of Allah with deep and thorough knowledge of Allah’s Ayaat and Naimat, as the very basic criteria of whatever we Kulu, consume, use, utilize, have company of and benefit. And warns us what would happen if we do not follow these divine instructions by saying that if you do not consume, engage, use, be in the company of, benefit to and from what and where is not Zikar of the Kitaab is done, i.e. what and where remembrance of the blessings of Allah by being Shaakir; engagement in actions as required by Allah in utter gratitude towards these blessings; understanding and implementation of the Ayaat of Allah; taking of lessons from previous nations’ stories and aiming to become Aabid of Allah by following the laws of Allah only through deep and thorough knowledge of Allah upon such consumption, benefit, use and utilization are not done; then it’s indeed equivalent to being disobedient of the laws of Allah and remaining outside of the parameters of Deen. Thus, any such company, for example, where the Zikar of Allah, through Allah’s deep and thorough knowledge is not taking place, should be avoided because these are the examples through which Shayateen, the people, elements, thoughts, laws, system working under people’s Nafs-e-Ammara, the egoistic self and Khutuwaat of Shaitaan, impact and influence the change in behaviors based on the Anzalna of Shaytaani thoughts towards the supporters, friends, allies and protectors of Shayateen. The basic aim and desired end result of all of such engagement, consumption, use, benefit and utilization is to replace and switch the Hidayah of Allah with the path of the Shayateen and its Awliya for you. Thus, you would be susceptible and vulnerable to follow the Shyateen and their Awliya out of your own likes and abilities, internal inclination, enthusiasm, motivation, eagerness and commitment, as a result of which, you would also be of those who do Shirk, who follow laws in matters of Deen from besides Allah and the laws of these Shayateen and its Awliyaa.
Ayah 6:122, “Is the one who Kana (كَانَ) Mayyatan (مَيْتًا) then Ahyeenahu (فَأَحْيَيْنَاهُ) him/her and Ja’alna (وَجَعَلْنَا) for him/her Nooran (نُورًا)- Yamshey (يَمْشِي) with it from the Annase (النَّاسِ) similar to the one in the Zulumaate (الظُّلُمَاتِ) then not with Kharij (بِخَارِجٍ) from it? That is Zayyin (زُيِّنَ) for the Kaafireen (لِلْكَافِرِينَ) what they Kanu (كَانُوا) do.”
Is the one who aim to become through his/her endeavors (كَانَ) a dead person who is metaphorically dead by being extreme in Kufar, by not being alive anymore (مَيْتًا) then is given life, is brought towards Emaan and Allah’s hidaya (فَأَحْيَيْنَاهُ) and appointed for duties (وَجَعَلْنَا) for him/her that light from Allah (نُورًا)- moving him/her towards Allah’s Hidaya (يَمْشِي) with it- the Noor from the humanity (النَّاسِ) similar to the one who is engulfed in darkness, hardships, injustices, confusions, uncertainties and doubts (الظُّلُمَاتِ) then not with any rescue or escape (بِخَارِجٍ) from it? That is because it’s attractive and looks pleasant (زُيِّنَ) for those who do Kufar, who do not seek knowledge, who are proud, arrogant, not Shaakir, who do not use their faculties, who are not upholders of their covenant with Allah (لِلْكَافِرِينَ) what they aim to reach (كَانُوا) through such deeds.
After reiterating it thrice, the divine instructions to do Zikar of Allah’s Ism upon whatever we Kulu, and the explicit warnings as to what would happen if we do not follow this divines instruction; in this Ayah Allah draws a comparison between two type of people, in terms of those who follow the laws and commands of Allah versus those who ignore and disobey by asking a question that ‘ Is the one who earlier aimed to become through his/her endeavors a dead person who is metaphorically dead by being extreme in Kufar and to be at the state where the person wouldn’t be dead anymore; but then the person was given life and brought towards Emaan and Allah’s hidaya through Allah’s Noor- the light from Allah which is the basis of Allah’s Hidayah through which Allah gives guidance to everyone towards the path of Allah to embed in them such traits which are reflective of the Fitrat of Allah and of those who are on the Hidayah? Can this person who is moving towards Allah’s Hidayah with the help of Allah’s Noor similar to the one who is engulfed in darkness, hardships, injustices, confusions, uncertainties and doubts but for that person there is no escape and rescue from that situation? It’s not possible that the one who is moving towards Allah’s Hidayah and Noor, being led away from the state of extreme Kufar and towards the path of Allah, from humanity could be in the similar situation than the one who continues to be in the darkness and confusion of Kufar from where the person is not able to escape because whatever the Kaafireen are doing looks attractive and pleasant for them. Thus, such people who do Kufar, who do not seek knowledge, who are proud, arrogant, not Shaakir, who do not use their faculties, who are not upholders of their covenant with Allah, they are ingulfed in such practices and deeds, which look pleasant and attractive to them, because of which they are not able to escape from their situations of darkness, confusion, hardships and uncertainties.
Ayah 6:123, “And thus, Ja’alna (جَعَلْنَا) from every Qaryatin (قَرْيَةٍ) Akabera (أَكَابِرَ) its Mujremeha (مُجْرِمِيهَا) so that they Yumkuru (لِيَمْكُرُوا) in it. And what they Yumkuruna (يَمْكُرُونَ) except with their Anfusahim (بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ) and what they Yasha’runa (يَشْعُرُونَ).”
And thus, appoint for duties (جَعَلْنَا) from every community, traditions, cultures, nations and societies (قَرْيَةٍ) magnified and projected people (أَكَابِرَ) its Mujrem- those who are the opposites of those who Amanu (مُجْرِمِيهَا) so that they plan, plot and scheme (لِيَمْكُرُوا) in it- such communities and societies. And what do they really plan and plot (يَمْكُرُونَ) except with their own Nafs (بِأَنْفُسِهِمْ) and what they perceive and have understanding of (يَشْعُرُونَ).
Continuing the discussions about state of utter darkness and confusions for people who do Kufar, this Ayah then highlights that through the impacts, influence of Shayateen and their Awliyaa upon most of the people, them being in state of utter darkness, confusion, uncertainties and doubts due to their acts of Kufar that look pleasant and attractive to them, they end up magnifying and projecting such people in their communities, traditions, cultures, nations and societies who are magnified to look bigger than they really are; who are the opposites of those who Amanu, as those who have doubts, fears, are uncertain, unsure and unsafe about Allah’s Ayaat, so that they plot and scheme in such communities and societies as Shyateen and their Awliyaa, working as a part of the overall system of Shaytan. But in reality, they are the ones who are plotting and scheming against their own Nafs-e-Mut’mainna, destroying their own selves and their own intellect, reasoning, perceptions and understandings. Thus, they do not plan, plot and scheme anything against anyone else except against their own selves based on what they understand and perceive, since they are the ones who are do not Yamanu, and therefore are deeply engulfed in doubts, misunderstanding, confusions and uncertainties from which they are unable to escape.
Ayah 6:124, “And when Ja’atuhum (جَاءَتْهُمْ) them Ayaat (آيَةٌ), Qalu (قَالُوا), ‘Never Numinu (نُؤْمِنَ) until is given similar to what was given Rusulu (رُسُلُ) of Allah.’ Allah A’lamu (أَعْلَمُ) Hais’u (حَيْثُ). Yaja’lu (يَجْعَلُ) Allah’s Risalat (رِسَالَتَهُ) will Yus’eebu (سَيُصِيبُ) those who Ajramu (أَجْرَمُوا)- S’agharun (صَغَارٌ) near Allah. And severe Azaabun (وَعَذَابٌ) with what they kanu (كَانُوا) Yumkurun (يَمْكُرُونَ).”
And when brought to fruition (جَاءَتْهُمْ) them a sign, proof of Allah (آيَةٌ), they reflect from their conducts & speech that (قَالُوا), ‘Never can all be at Aman (نُؤْمِنَ) until is given similar to what was given to the messenger of Allah (رُسُلُ) of Allah.’ Allah knows and gives knowledge (أَعْلَمُ) whatever capacity or ability one has (حَيْثُ). Allah has appointed for duties (يَجْعَلُ) Allah’s Message (رِسَالَتَهُ) will cause adversity, catastrophe, tragedy, failure, calamity, disaster or misfortune for(سَيُصِيبُ) those who are the opposites of those who Amanu (أَجْرَمُوا)- As opposed to Kabeer, such people are S’agheer- diminished, reduced and shrunk in worth, value or significance (صَغَارٌ) near Allah. And for them is severe punishment as a recompense (وَعَذَابٌ) with what they aimed through their endeavors of (كَانُوا) their planning, plotting and scheming (يَمْكُرُونَ).
Continuing the discussion about people who are deeply engulfed in darkness, confusion and uncertainties by getting influenced by Shaytaan and their Awliya whom they obey and whom they have magnified and projected from what they really are; indulging deeper due to their acts of Kufar into this darkness from which they cannot escape; Allah now, in this Ayah describes their behaviors more by saying that when is brought to fruition upon them any sign or proof of Allah, either from the Kalam of Allah or from Allah’s creations, their response as reflected from their conducts and speech is that, ‘we all can never be at Aman, seek knowledge, use our faculties or be utterly convinced until we are given similar what was given to the messenger of Allah, in our communities, who is delivering to us Allah’s Ayaat.’ Allah knows and gives knowledge based on people own decision, capabilities and abilities. And for those who do not Amanu as those who have doubts, fears, are uncertain, unsure and unsafe about Allah’s Ayaat, due to their own acts of Kufar, their lack of using their faculties or them not seeking knowledge, Allah’s Message, both from the Kalam of Allah as well as from nature and Allah’s creations, will cause adversity, catastrophe, tragedy, failure, calamity, disaster and misfortune in one form or another since such people may be magnified but in the eyes of Allah are S’agheer- diminished, reduced and shrunk in worth, value and significance. And for them is severe punishment as a recompense for all their endeavors, planning and scheming as part of the system of Shaitan, and against Allah’s Ayaat, Risalat and message.
Ayah 6:125, “So, whoever Yurede (يُرِدِ) of Allah that Yahdeyahu (يَهْدِيَهُ)- Yushrah (يَشْرَحْ) S’adrahu (صَدْرَهُ) to Islaam (لِلْإِسْلَامِ). And whoever Yurid (يُرِدْ) that Yuzelluhu (يُضِلَّهُ)- Yaja’l (يَجْعَلْ) S’adrahu (صَدْرَهُ) Zaeyeqan (ضَيِّقًا) Harajan (حَرَجًا) as though Yas’a’adu (يَصَّعَّدُ) from the sky. Thus, Allah Yaja’alu (يَجْعَلُ)- the Rijsa (الرِّجْسَ) A’ala (عَلَى) on those who do not Yuminun (يُؤْمِنُونَ).”
So, whoever desiring (يُرِدِ) of Allah that guides him/her (يَهْدِيَهُ)- exposes their (يَشْرَحْ) priorities and interests (صَدْرَهُ) in complete submission and obedience to Deen-e-Islam (لِلْإِسْلَامِ). And whoever aim for based on their decisions (يُرِدْ) that they want to enter into the state of confusion, doubts and uncertainties and to be misled away from the path of Allah (يُضِلَّهُ)- then they have appointed (يَجْعَلْ) for their priorities and focus (صَدْرَهُ) restrictions, restrain and limitations (ضَيِّقًا) entering into the state of disaster, destruction and failures (حَرَجًا) as though they are exhausted, misled into the state of arrogance and pride as well as being engulfed (يَصَّعَّدُ) from the sky and their environments. Thus, Allah has appointed for duties (يَجْعَلُ)- Rijsan behavior by those who do not Amanu- those who under the influence and impacts of Shaytaan- suffering from such condition whereby they are not aligned with how they are supposed to be as created by Allah- with peak of being morally, ethically or socially disfigured and contaminated (الرِّجْسَ) at its worst (عَلَى) on those who do not Amanu (يُؤْمِنُونَ).
After highlighting the worst possible behaviors of people under the impacts of Shaytan- as Rijsan, Allah now, in this Ayah defines the Sha’a and Yureedu of Allah, by drawing out comparison between two type of people, in terms of those who follow the laws and commands of Allah, connected with the Sha’a of Allah and Yureedu of Allah versus those who ignore and disobey Allah’s laws and instead follow Shayateen and their Awliya; by saying that ‘whoever aims for, desires Allah, is aligned with, gets connected to the system of Allah by following Allah’s laws and commands so that the whole system of Allah will guide the person towards the Hidayah of Allah by exposing and setting forth the person’s priorities and interests, keeping these in their front at all times to Deen-e-Islam. Thus, they submit to the laws of Allah by submitting and being obedient of and in alignment with Deen-e-Islam, in complete submission and obedience to Allah by turning their complete attention and focus towards Allah, keeping Allah as their desired destination and objective. Whereas on the other hand, those who desires to be misled, based on their own decisions and acts of Kufar and disobedience to Allah’s laws; they aim for state of confusion, doubts and uncertainties and to be misled away from the path of Allah; for them, their priorities and focus are faced with restrictions, restrain and limitations making them enter into the state of disaster, destruction, anxiety and failures as though they are exhausted and tired; as they are led into the state of arrogance and pride of being in the sky due to them being engulfed in their environment of shirk, Shayaten and their Awliya. Thus, this is how is appointed for them the state of Rijsan- as a result of which they are under the influence and impacts of Shaytaan. They are suffering from conditions whereby they are not aligned with how they are supposed to be as created by Allah as intellectual, thinking, and reasoning humans, thus they are suffering from moral, ethical and social disfigurement and contamination as exhibited when under the influence of and deeply engulfed by the Shaytan. They are obedient and followers of laws of those that oppose Allah in a state of war against Allah’s message the state of being at the worst possible influence of Shaitan, at their worst possible behaviors and levels because they do not seek knowledge, use their intellect to be at Aman, conviction with Allah’s Ayaat, are not the upholders of their covenant with Allah and are not at peace and good will for others.
Ayah 6:126, “And this was S’irat’u (صِرَاطُ) Rabbeka (رَبِّكَ) Mustaqueeman (مُسْتَقِيمًا). Certainly Fas’alna (فَصَّلْنَا) the Ayaat (الْآيَاتِ) so that to Quomin (لِقَوْمٍ) Yazakkarun (يَذَّكَّرُونَ).”
And this rules, principals, methods and boundaries of (صِرَاطُ) the Rabb given to you already in the past (رَبِّكَ) that you’re supposed to establish, strengthen and support by remaining steadfast and perseverant, standing firm, persistent and strong (مُسْتَقِيمًا). Certainly, Allah has explained in details as well as set in motion the whole regime of cause of effect with the help of and through (فَصَّلْنَا) the signs, proofs of Allah through Kalam and the creations of Allah (الْآيَاتِ) so that to establish, support and strengthen (لِقَوْمٍ) the doing of Zikar as well as those who do Zikar of Allah (يَذَّكَّرُونَ).
After describing the two routes, whether to be on the path of Hidayah of Allah, or be Rijsan, deeply engulfed with Shayateen, in this Ayah Allah now is describing the path of Allah’s Hidayah more in terms of telling us that all these are the rules, principals, methods and boundaries given by our Rabb- the one who is carrying out the Rabibiat for everyone; that we’re supposed to establish, strengthen and support by remaining steadfast and perseverant, standing firm, persistent and strong in the path of Hidayah of Allah. Allah’s instructions for us, as those who are on the Hudaya, is to remain firm strong and steadfast on the laws, rules, methods, principals, boundaries, commandments of Allah as given to the humanity in the form of Hidayah, the Nobao’at, the Risaalat and Message of Allah since Allah has explained in details as well as set in motion the whole regime of cause of effect with the help of and through the signs, proofs of Allah through Kalam and the creations of Allah. Both the laws of Deen as well as the laws of Nature has been created and set in motion by Allah, and form part of the whole system of cause and effect so that to establish, support and strengthen the doing of Zikar as well as those who do Zikar of Allah – Zikar of the Kitaab, remember the blessings of Allah by being Shaakir, engage in actions as required by Allah in utter gratitude towards these blessings, understand and implement the Ayaat of Allah, take lessons from previous nations’ stories and be Aabid of Allah by following the laws of Allah only.
Ayah 6:127, “For them is Daaru (دَارُ) the Ssalame (السَّلَامِ) near their Rabb (رَبِّهِمْ) and is the one who is their Waliyuhum (وَلِيُّهُمْ) with what they Kanu (كَانُوا) do.”
For them is the strong-held position of (دَارُ) the submission and obedience (السَّلَامِ) near their Rabb (رَبِّهِمْ)- and is the one who is their supporter, ally, friend, inspiration and protector (وَلِيُّهُمْ) with what they aimed to reach the final destination through their (كَانُوا) deeds.
After describing the two routes, whether to be on the path of Hidayah of Allah, or be Rijsan, deeply engulfed with Shayateen and after describing the path of Allah’s Hidayah, in this Ayah, Allah is now describing the path of those who are working in the path of Shaytaan by saying that ‘for such people who are Rijsan, who are engulfed deeply in the Khutuwaat and thoughts of Shaytan, impacted and influenced by Shayateen and their Awliya, is the strong-held position, dominated like an iron-grip standing and situation of submission and obedience, from which nothing can deter them, which is near their Rabb only, those whom they have taken up as deities from other than Allah, whose laws they follow instead of Allah’s and these Arbaab- their deities are actually the ones who are near them as their Awliyaa- their supporter, ally, friend, inspiration and protector and for whom they aimed to reach their final destination through their actions and deeds.
C. IMPLEMENTATION IN TODAY’S LIFE:
These Ayahs of Surah Al-Ana’m i.e., 6:118 to 127 give us the following divine guidance that we can apply in our day to day lives.
- KULU FROM WHAT ZIKAR ISM OF ALLAH UPON IT: This divine instruction is reiterated thrice in these ayahs, telling us the significance of only consuming, engaging with, using, be in the company of, benefiting to and from such aspects, company, elements, people, gatherings, laws and systems where is done the Zikar of the Kitaab; the remembrance of the blessings of Allah by being Shaakir; engagement in actions as required by Allah in utter gratitude towards these blessings; understanding and implementation of the Ayaat of Allah; taking of lessons from previous nations’ stories as per the Kitaab and becoming Aabid of Allah by following the laws of Allah only through deep and thorough knowledge of Allah upon such consumption, benefit and use. Thus, the key criteria before we enter into any engagement, use anything, benefit from or to anyone, consume anything, be of use or use anything or anyone; or be in any company or gathering is to identify if the Zikar of Allah’s Ism is being done or not; if Allah’s Kitaab inclusive of all the laws of Allah, is adhered to or not; if the Ayaat of Allah is being understood or implemented or not; if Allah’s blessings are remembered or not; if people are being Shaakir of Allah by obeying Allah’s laws in complete and utter gratitude or not or if they are being proud and arrogant by being Kaafir; because this is the key criterion to be on the path of Hidayah or be on the path of Shaytan and Rijsan.
- THE PATH OF HIDAYAH: The divine instructions to Kulu- consume, use, engage, benefit only from what Zikar of Allah’s Ism is done, is the key criterion to follow if we are to seek knowledge, use our intellect, be at utter conviction with Allah and Allah’s Ayaat- both from the Kalam of Allah and the creations of Allah, if we are the upholders of our covenant with Allah and are at peace, and goodwill for others. If we keep this criterion in mind, we would also be mindful and steer clear from any such deeds and conducts that destroy human faculties and abilities, whether done openly through visible or obvious aspects or done secretly in concealed and hidden manner. So, whoever is aligned with, aim for and desire Allah, the whole system of Allah guides that person towards the Hidayah of Allah, by exposing and setting forth Islam as their priorities and interests, keeping the submission to Deen-e-Islam in front of them at all times, guiding them, and making sure they remain steadfast on the path of Allah’s Hidayah. And this is the way, the method, the code of conduct and way of life as bestowed upon us by our Rabb, that we are instructed to establish, strengthen and support by remaining steadfast and perseverant on the path of Allah’s Hidayah. All the Ayaat of Allah are not only the signs and proofs of Allah but basically are integral part of Allah’s system of requital- laws of cause of effect and perfect recompense based on one’s own decisions and actions. The basic aim of this whole system of Allah is to establish, support and strengthen, not only the doing of Zikar but also those who do Zikar of Allah – Zikar of the Kitaab, remember the blessings of Allah by being Shaakir, engage in actions as required by Allah in utter gratitude towards these blessings, understand and implement the Ayaat of Allah, take lessons from previous nations’ stories and be Aabid of Allah by following the laws of Allah only.
- DIVINE WARNINGS- THE PATH OF RIJSAN: If, on the other hand, we do not follow the divine instructions to Kulu- consume, use, engage, benefit only from what Zikar of Allah’s Ism is done; then we end might end up engaging, consuming, using, benefiting from, and to, such deeds and conducts that destroy human faculties and abilities and that are at such worst levels that if exposed would bring extreme humiliation and disgrace. Thus, those who are not careful and not abide by this key criterion of only Kulu what Zikar of Ism Allah is upon it, then they are susceptible and vulnerable to commit these acts and therefore earning their recompense according to their actions, and deeds. Additionally, by doing Kufar, not seeking knowledge, being proud, arrogant, not Shaakir, by not using their faculties, by not being upholders of their covenant with Allah and by being disobedient of this commandment and laws of Allah, they remain outside of the parameters of Deen and are vulnerable to be influenced and impacted by such people, elements, thoughts, laws and system of Shaitan that work under Nafs-e-Ammara and egoistic selves. Thus, they become influenced and impacted to change their behaviors and become part of the system of Shaytan that propels them towards the Awilya- supporters, friends, allies and protectors of Shaytaan. For such people these Shayateen and their Awliya becomes their Rabb, whose laws they follow instead of Allah’s. This is how they replace and switch the path of Allah’s Hidayah with that of Shaytaan, the following of which in obedience, leads people to do Shirk by asking them to follow laws from besides Allah and the laws of these Shayateen and their Awliyaa. Thus, through their own actions of Shirk and Kufar, they enter into the state of confusion, doubts and uncertainties, being misled far away from the path of Allah, with their priorities and focus, severely restricted, restrained and limited to lead them towards disaster, destruction, exhaustion, tiredness and failures as though they are exhausted, misled into the state of arrogance and pride as well as being engulfed due to the impacts of their surroundings of Shayateen. This is how they are led towards the state of being at the worst possible influence of Shaitan, at their worst possible behaviors and levels, reflective of moral, social and ethical disfigurement and contamination, because they did not Amanu.
- THE CONCEPT OF HARAM- A KEY PART OF ALLH’S SYSTEM OF REQUITTAL: As we know what is prohibited by Allah and mentioned in the Quran is identified by Allah clearly and should be avoided at all costs except what is absolutely necessary. Whatever is not mentioned in the Quran as prohibitions is allowed. Allah has based the laws of cause and effect through the lists of All of the prohibitions that we need to avoid at all cost, so that to prepare us for the perfect recompense. Whoever follows this system of requital based on the lists of prohibitions and strictly adhere to these, would get the best recompense from the system of Allah. Whereas on the other hand, majority of people exploit this system of prohibitions, as to what is Haram and what is allowed to a great extent, in order cause confusions, doubts, create uncertainties and mislead others through delusions, desires, wishful thinking and falsehood due to lack of knowledge. These acts are aimed at causing hinderance, blocking, weakening, going against and opposing this system of requital of Allah, built upon the list of prohibitions.
- COMPARISON OF THE TWO PATHS: These Ayahs gives us explicit distinctions between the two paths, (1) The Path of Allah’s Hidayah: Even if someone has reached a stage of extreme Kufar, whereby the person is metaphorically dead due to not using their faculties, not seeking knowledge and not being alive; even from that state of metaphoric death, the person can be brought back to life with the help of Noor of Allah, the light on the basis of which Allah gives Hidayah, that are based on Fitrat of Allah, leading the person towards such traits that Allah wants to see in us, moving and progressing that person towards the Emaan and the path of Hidaya (2) The Path of Shaytan & Rijsan: Being on the path of Shaytan and Rijsan is like being engulfed deep in darkness, hardships, injustices, confusions, uncertainties and doubts, from which there is no rescue or escape since for those who do Kufar, who do not seek knowledge, who do not use their faculties, who are proud, arrogant and not Shaakir towards Allah, their actions and deeds look pleasant and attractive to them. And this is how, in such communities and societies, those who are Mujrem (the opposites of those who Amanu, as those who have doubts, fears, are uncertain, unsure and unsafe about Allah’s Ayaat) get magnified and projected to look bigger than they really are and are followed in complete blind obedience, plotting and scheming against their own selves and against their own understanding and Sha’ur, in such complete and blind following in the path of Shaytan.
- ALLAH’S RISALAT AND HOW IT WORKS: Allah has appointed to every community and society Allah’s Rasool, whose only duty is to deliver the Ayaat of Allah. But to Amanu, to seek knowledge of the Ayaat of Allah, to use one’s faculties to be at Aman, utter and deep conviction about the Ayaat of Allah, is all dependent on one’s own intention, abilities and decisions because this is how Allah gives knowledge which is based on entirely our own decision, capabilities and abilities. For those who Amanu, they benefit from the system of Allah, but for those who do not Amanu, those who have doubts, fears, are uncertain, unsure and unsafe about Allah’s Ayaat, then Allah’s Risalat, Allah’s Message, both from the Kalam of Allah as well as from nature and Allah’s creations will result in hardships, destruction, devastations and disasters for such people as a form of their recompense, their due rights based on their own actions and decisions. Such people may be magnified to look bigger than they really are in front of the humanity but in the eyes of Allah, such people are diminished, reduced and shrunk in worth, value and significance, since they are far away from what Allah has created them to be- as thinking, reasoning and caring individuals.
